"As a travel researcher, I do more than just give people tickets," explains John Guinn, who runs Holiday Hut, an independent travel research company in Tingrith near Milton Keynes. He carefully researches and vets potential destinations for his clients, so he can create their ideal itineraries.
"I check everything out first," he stresses. "I've been doing it for seven years now. Clients pay me for their time, not for the actual tickets, so I help them get the best deals."
"I was a telecommunications engineer by trade," he recalls, describing how his business started. "but I fancied a change." The first client he researched a trip for was his wife's boss. No pressure then!
Backups taken care of
John's move to QuickBooks Online was prompted by a nightmare business scenario. "My computer crashed before Christmas," he explains. "I back up like a good person, but everything got corrupted before the backup, so the backup was corrupted. I lost everything."
Ouch. No wonder, then, that he decided to look for new software that would keep his data much safer. "That's why I like this software," he confirms, referring to QuickBooks Online. "It's all online, so I can access it from any computer."
The free trial and monthly payments helped persuade John to give QuickBooks Online a go too. "I don't have the money to shell out on bits of software all the time," he reckons. "QuickBooks Online is a low monthly outgoing. It's quick to cancel it too - there's no ringing up, you just do it online."
Lots of accounting software benefits
That's not to say he's thinking of cancelling. John has seen plenty of other benefits from adopting QuickBooks Online, saying he feels much better organised now. "Before the big crash it was a bit of a nightmare keeping track, but now it's just a few clicks and a bit of typing."
"I had four or five different bits of software," he continues, "- doing the invoices, doing the itinerary, writing it all out on bits of paper. With QuickBooks Online, I can do everything in one place."
As you'd expect with his job, John travels a lot. "I was in St Lucia in November in the sunshine and selling a trip to see Santa Claus in Lapland," he says, using a matter-of-fact tone which implies this sort of thing is a regular occurrence. "Being able to access things from anywhere is really handy."
Sounds like a dream job. And with QuickBooks Online, he's able to make it a reality.
